Ruta del Ferro i del Carbó. Via Verda. Ripollès

Iron and Coal Route

It’s a low difficulty route, for both trekking and cycling. It follows the old railway track from which it is named. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries this line transported the coal extracted from the Ogassa mines to Ripoll and Sant Joan de les Abadesses. The old train track has been restored and made into one of the four Girona Greenways.

Along the route we can enjoy the nature which surrounds it. There are agricultural fields and pastures, or the Cal Gat Reservoir. We can also find spectacular Romanesque sites in the area, such as the monastery, Sant Joan and Sant Pol Church, and the medieval bridge in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, or the Santa Maria monastery (we can’t miss its spectacular arcade) and Sant Pere Church in Ripoll
